Solar-Powered Electricity for a Village

© 2010 Jenny Matthews/CARE
More than 70% of sub-Saharan Africa lacks electricity. In rural areas this often exceeds 95%. Solar power is a simple, sustainable means of improving the lives of the rural poor. With solar power, people can have light in their home after the sun goes down. This not only improves safety, but lets kids do their homework. Solar power also lets people charge their inexpensive mobile phones, which are indispensable to the rural poor of Africa as expensive smart phones are to people in wealthy countries.

The gifts in this catalog are virtual gifts representative of what CARE does to support the fight against poverty.

To help deliver the most effective solutions to the greatest number of people, your donation will be combined with other funds and used where most needed, not necessarily to purchase or distribute the actual item shown. Gifts of Lasting Change help empower women, girls and their communities while also being a unique and meaningful gift for the gift recipient.
